Boeing’s latest offering to the global aerospace arena, the B-787 Dreamliner, was fabricated and sub-assembled by subcontractors at several remote locations before sections were shipped to the wide body final assembly plant in Washington state. This process was relatively new to Boeing and whole world was wondering if it would succeed. In a bold move Boeing planned to broadcast the rollout event for the world to view live via satellite and webcast in nine different languages. The parts had to be right the first time and they had to be on time.
Eaton Corporation, with 30 years experience in aerospace air and environment control systems, had the task of fabricating air ducting system components. A single problem with the manufacturing process for one fairly complicated section of duct required “eleventh-hour” production line changes that would have prevented Eaton from meeting their deadline, thereby delaying shipment to Boeing.
BC Engineering and Design provided the timely CMM services that were required to troubleshoot and correct the fabrication problem. After several process corrections performed during a single weekend, the problems were corrected and the ducting was delivered on time.
